      October 2019

      Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to keep you updated with a couple of things The Fostering Network has been working on over the past few months and remind you that you can contact me if you require any advice or support.

      Keep Connected Principles

The Fostering Network is calling on everyone who plays a part in enabling children and young people to move within, or out of, the care system to support them to maintain their most important relationships.

The Fostering Network has developed a set of principles, in consultation with foster carers, fostering services and organisations in the care sector, including those working with young people, to shape how transitions from and within the care system are approached across the UK. The aim is for all children and young people who are moving on from foster families to be enabled to keep in touch with them – and with other significant people in their lives – through better understanding of the importance of this, planning and support.

      Charter Checklist

You may all know about the foster carers charter which has been around for some time now.  This year we have updated our charter and are calling on every foster service and placing authority in the UK to implement a charter.

A charter is an agreement between a placing authority in their role as a corporate parent, a fostering service and foster carers that sets out each party’s roles and responsibilities. They can help foster carers to get the recognition they deserve and need, to provide children with the best possible care.

In response to feedback from our members, we have developed the Foster Carers’ Charter Checklist. It is a tool for fostering services and local authorities to use to assess how effectively their charter has been implemented and to support improvements. It includes actions for launching the charter, inducting new people, communicating about the charter and reporting on progress. We would encourage you to consider the role of the charter within your organisation and add notes to each section accordingly.
